Job title: Science Teacher

Classes you teach: Biology, Physical Science, Chemistry

Previous work experience: I have varied experiences as a teacher. I started out teaching in Canterbury, England for academically gifted high school girls. I have taught deep in the Amish Counties of Pennsylvania as well as many years in North Minneapolis working with gang members. Prior to teaching I worked in various museums doing art conservation.

Years with the district:  4th year

What are some of your hobbies and interests? My interests lie in the arts and sciences, and being with my family.

What’s something interesting about you that not a lot of people know? I have a commissioned painting hanging in Florence, Italy.

Why did you decide to pursue a career in education? Mainly, I wanted struggling students to know that they can learn and succeed despite the odds. Also, I love to learn and love to pass that love on.

What do you enjoy most about working with students? I really enjoy seeing students have the ‘light bulb’ moments, I enjoy seeing their perspectives and a enjoy seeing their growth: emotional, social and academic.

Share a fun project you've worked on or innovative teaching method you've used this year. What made it memorable for you?

One astronomy project that I taught was having student’s create a model of what humans would have to do and create in order to survive on Mars. There were many ingenious ideas on how to extract water from the frozen water below the soil, how to transport materials across craters, how to devise and employ solar energy resources as well as underground living spaces.

What do you enjoy about being part of Faribault Public Schools?

I love the embracement of project-based learning, STEM enthusiasm and the willingness to try new educational philosophies.
